Who are we?
The Cognitive Systems Research (CSR) team at Intel Labs is seeking a motivated data scientist with a focus on deep learning, knowledge representation and reasoning, neuro-symbolic AI, and multimodal systems. This is a full-time position.
While the AI industry is primarily focusing on the efficiency and reach of DL technologies and products entering the market today, it is becoming clear that DL approaches have their limits. The next wave of AI will need to incorporate new innovations to acquire more human-like cognitive competencies and address real-world challenges like explainability, reasoning, out-of-distribution (OOD) data instances, extensibility to new domains with minimal additional data, system adaptation through continuous learning, and other limitations of current DL approaches.
The CSR team drives Intel's innovation at the intersection of machine intelligence and cognition. Our efforts combine the latest in deep learning, with the integration of knowledge structures as well as logic-based reasoning and neuro-symbolic AI, to build self-learning AI that can make informed decisions in complex context-rich situations. We develop systems that are multimodal: they can learn from language, vision, audio, video, point clouds, and structured knowledge.
What will you do?
In this position, the candidate will support the challenging goals of the CSR team and leverage their strong knowledge of the field to identify disruptive solutions in the market and find the best match to our program, collaborate with universities and startups that have cutting edge research and define a direction for the effort aligned with our internal research. This requires a familiarity with the state of the art in the field. The candidate must also possess strong verbal and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented environment. The candidates are expected to maintain knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories.
What are we looking for?

- 5+ years of research/hands-on experience with one or more of the following areas:
- Natural language Processing (NLP)
- Neural networks (NN) and deep learning (DL)
- Knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR)
- Knowledge graphs
- Intelligent systems
- Knowledge of Python and experience with Python libraries for ML: pytorch, tensorflow, keras, etc
- Publications in Tier-1 venues such as AAAI, NeurIPS, ICLR, ACL, CVPR, ICML, EMNLP, ICCV, ECCV
- Innovative out-of-the-box thinker with experience in driving new cutting-edge technology initiatives
- Understanding of HW implementation of AI acceleration is a plus.
