Senior Technical Writer

Job Description

In this position, you will be responsible for defining and implementing documentation strategy for Intel software products and latest SW technologies. You will also support corporate initiative to migrate all documentation to a common open source tool-chain and format, such as ReStructuredText format and GitHub. You will develop Getting Started guides, tutorials, user guides. Cookbooks, and API reference manuals to help software developers quickly start using Intel products an dtechnologies, such as the Intel oneAPI, OpenVINOTM, and AI products.


As a technical writer, you will be responsible for designing, writing, revising and/or editing of technical documentation, developing documentation guidelines and creating standards, templates, and style guides to drive consistency and efficiency across the products. You will develop content from scratch based on product knowledge or from engineering specifications.

As a senior writer, you will influence the strategic and tactical direction of the software product teams you will be supporting by defining the overall content strategy for their products in collaboration with the Developer Experience teams and develop. You will need to understand product vision and requirements and ensure the product meets the minimum out-of-the-box UX requirements.
You will act as a documentation technology expert, consultant, and program/project manager, participate in product definition, requirements and roadmap discussions. You will define doc deliverables and schedules, implement release procedures, and train peers.


You will be responsible for architecting the content, designing the final layout, and publishing product documentation on the web in specialized formats. You will manage communications and coordination across the team to ensure content is published and deployed in time for product launches.
You will be an integral part of a software product development and release team, and will work closely with software engineers and other project stakeholders, both in the domains of proprietary and open-source products, to develop software product content strategy for offline and online (web) use. You will work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to identify gaps in existing content and develop and implement a plan to address the gaps. You will attend planning and/or coordination meetings to assess customer requirements and define appropriate content solutions.


In addition to excellent planning, coordination, and communication skills, this position requires an ability to work with remote teams in different time zones (Ex: Pacific, Central, Eastern time in United States) and with SMEs and peers who speak English as their first language.


Qualifications

We are looking for a senior (staff) technical writer with strong English writing skills and equally strong technical skills and aptitude, programming skills being a plus. Experience in working with open-source documentation will be highly desirable.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in English or a related field with some course work in Computer Science and related fields. Or

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science or SW programming with excellent English writing skills.

Qualifications:

  • 6-7 years designing, writing, and publishing technical documentation for software products.

  • 3-5 years of experience in open source doc authoring tools and technology (rST/Sphinx, Git, GitLab, GitHub) is a big advantage.

  • 3-4 years of experience in XML-based authoring using DITA OT, XMetaL Editor, and Content Management Systems is a great plus.

  • 3-4 years of experience with web-based publishing is a plus.

  • 2-3 years of programming experience is highly desirable, which could include one of or more of the following: C++, Python, C#, Perl, Java, Fortran, JavaScript, or other current scripting languages.

  • Ability to read code and improve comments

  • Ability to build, run, test sample code and corresponding instructions.

  • Good working knowledge of Windows and one of the other operating systems, like Linux, macOS, or Chrome.
