Business Analysts (BAs) work on project teams with Application Developers, Testing Analysts, and Project Managers (on large projects). On smaller projects, the BA is expected to perform the project management function, including scope, time, and quality (including data quality) management. BAs work on several applications, projects, and/ or programs simultaneously. BAs gather and clarify business requirements with the customer to understand the business problem. They must understand the customer's business processes to identify the value drivers associated with the project. During the build phase of the Program Life-cycle or Software Development Life Cycle, the BA may perform testing as a quality check to ensure business and data quality requirements have been addressed in the solution. When involved in testing, BAs plan and execute User Acceptance Testing by creating test scripts; they also coordinate testing efforts with end users. In the Deployment phase of the application, project, or program, BAs are often responsible for coordinating end user training and facilitating Train-the-Trainer sessions. BAs must have strong communication and customer engagement skills given their role in explaining and clarifying issues with the customer and translating business requirements into technical requirements for the project team. Some BAs perform specialized tasks in addition to their core job responsibilities. For example, BAs may consult on tools, systems, services, or application integration; provide input to system design; make decisions for functionality and configuration; configure applications; gauge and measure data quality levels; and/or provide production support and troubleshooting. BAs may work on project teams as a Data Quality advocate, providing subject matter expertise or leadership to ensure adherence to Data Architecture and Data Quality principles and methodologies (TQdM). In some cases, the BA will own specific data deliverables and have responsibility for the health of the data within their scope of influence. Additionally, BAs may be responsible for budgetary planning (capital and expense), headcount analysis, Plan/ POR, benchmarking, as well as departmental indicators.
