Linux Software Engineer

Job Description

The Open Source Technology Center (OTC) part of the Software and Services Group (SSG) is looking for experienced Linux Software Engineers to join a group of great engineers who develop, build, validate and release a new Linux based Operating System.

As a Linux Software Engineer in this team you will:

Work on a full software development life cycle (development, integration, build, validation, release) in an agile fashion, ensuring consistency, quality and security throughout the whole cycle. This involves among others, the next specific areas:
+ Understand new features to be added to the system
+ Review with the team software / features requirements and goals
+ Meet software / feature requirements by developing or integrating content to the OS
+ Develop and/or leverage existing tests to ensure the content is correct/complete
+ Design test scenarios based on requirements
+ Write and automate test cases and add them to execution frameworks.
+ Automate tasks where appropriate, leveraging strong coding skills as required
+ Install and set up test environments (OS installation, network configuration, etc.)
+ Pro-actively troubleshoot, analyze, research and even fix failures detected in the system
+ Open, follow up, validate and close defects
+ Prioritize, plan and report progress and status of tasks and deliverables on a regular basis, as well as keep schedules and metrics up to date


Qualifications

Skills / Qualifications

+ Hands on experience in Linux based OS (installation, configuration, upgrade, maintenance)
+ Deep understanding of Operating Systems (memory management, file systems, processes)
+ Knowledge and understanding of Linux Architecture and key areas like boot process, systemd, kernel architecture, I/O, interfaces
+ Good understanding of the open source development model
+ Involvement with open source communities and projects is desired
+ Automation and continuous integration / continuous delivery (CI/CD) mentality
+ Fluent in 'git' version control system
+ Focus on automation, using scripting languages such as sh, perl or python
+ Knowledge and experience in Validation / Testing (types, levels, approaches, methodologies, strategies)
+ Experience writing test plans, test scenarios and test scripts
+ Experience reproducing and documenting software defects
+ Able to focus on Validation and Quality
+ Self-starter who can work with minimal supervision in a team environment
+ Experience with Agile/Scrum programming and continuous integration practices
+ Excellent communication skills in English, both verbal and written
+ Knowledge of Linux Packaging internals, RPM or DEB packaging

Academic Qualifications

B.S. Degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or other related engineering discipline with 4+ years of relevant experience; or M.S. Degree with 2+ years of relevant experience.
